125 years from this photo of the first school in Kaycee. This cabin is one of the oldest buildings in the area, first used as a homestead cabin in 1890 or earlier on the Kaltenbach homestead west of Kaycee before it was sold to the Town of Kaycee for use as a school and town hall. Today it is located at the Hoofprints of the past museum.

High School and Grade School Buffalo, WY

A little bit of history of our Buffalo "city" schools. We have wonderful photos of the rural schools too. Sadly, there was a bad fire in March of 1906 that completely burned the almost new school. This is the school that we now call the Bomber Mountain Civic Center. Images and information are from Johnson County WY Library

Old Rock School with Students late 1800's

1898 Rock School 2016

The Rock School house was built in 1898 with stone quarried from the local hills. The Lincoln Land Compnay provided the land so that the Community could build a multi-purpose building to be used as a school, church and community building.  Local families and businessmen provided the labor and supplies. When finished, the one room building measured about 26' x 30' and served the students and families of the area for 100 years. A new high school was built in 1929, but students still used the Rock School as a classroom. Eventually, it was turned into the Industrial Art/Vo Ag building. In 1992, the doors of the Rock School were officially closed to the public. From 1992 to 2015, the community worked diligently to help maintain the Rock School. Starting in 2015, Sheridan County School District #3 held community meetings to develop a long term plan for the Rock School because the structure of the building started to fail. Due to deterioration of the building , the Rock School was torn down in the Fall of 2016. The Picnic Area and Memorial were completed in the Spring of 2018 as a way to dedicate and preserve the history of the Rock School

Nine Mile School - email the County Coordinator if you have any details of this photo!!

Although it looks like Sunday school, the caption on the back of this photo says "Children's Day" at the Mayoworth School on North Fork of the Powder River. This school operated from approximately 1900-1960. During that time the Mayoworth Parent-Teachers Association, the first one in the county, was formed in 1941. Its purpose was to raise money to buy things needed at the school. It raised funds to buy a piano, chairs, books, and a projector. One of the primary fundraising methods was poker games, however, this ceased after a visit from the Wyoming State PTA. So the club became the Mayoworth Community Club and expanded its purpose to funding community projects. The poker playing continued.
