When Buffalo was a Frontier Town!

south on Main St. The two horses way in the back on the left are
standing in front of Conrad's store (formerly
Trabing's). That store was located where First Northern Bank is now. The
bank started inside this store and was called Stebbins, Conrad
and Co.
In Buffalo's First Century, Wilbur Holt tells us,
"Sometime during the year 1883 - I do not have the exact date since
there is no official record for private banks - Stebbins, Conrad
and Company opened a bank in the Conrad building, with the
capital of Fifty Thousand Dollars. About this time the City began to
have a few growing pains, and the community felt the need of more
adequate banking facilities, so it was decided to organize a new
National Bank to take over the assets of the private bank. One
February 2, 1885, a charter was granted to the First National
Bank of Buffalo, Wyoming, and the following organizers were
duly elected as Directors: J.W. Collins of New York, president; J.M.
Lobban, vice president; C.M. White, cashier; W.P. Stebbins of New York,
J.H. Conrad, H. A. Bennett and Geo. L. Hot as the remaining directors.
Mr. White resigned on April 1, 1888, and Mr. W.J. Thom succeeded him. It
was my good fortune to receive my early bank training under him. He was
an able banker, and we worked together in perfect harmony for many
years."
Holt goes on to say, "The following prominent men have served
as President up to 1935, since which time I have been doing the job,
with the exception of nine months when Burt Griggs was President and I
was Chairman of the Board; Judge J.M. Lobban, C.J. Hogerson, J. G.
Oliver, H.P. Rothwell and Burt Griggs. Many of our leading citizens have
served as directors of the bank during the past; Richard Young, John
Espoinda, David Young, Patsey Healy, E.D. Metcalf, Mrs. S.E . Webber,
F.G.S. Hesse, Harry Gallup, Harry Ellis, W.J. Jones, Clarence Tarbet,
J.F. Dillinger, Wm. J. Kirven, Robert Holt and Robert McBride."
