By 1915 much of the area at Nine Mile had been homesteaded, not only
by men, but also a number of women. One particular spot at Nine Mile was
known as "Widowville," as four ladies had adjoining homesteads,
including the houses, which were located together at the adjacent
corners.
Nora Askov Freeman was widowed by Dan Freeman, a Nine Mile
homesteader. She established the Freeman Hospital in Buffalo after the
death of her husband Daniel Freeman. She eventually married
Dr. John Knebel and worked as a nurse.
