Jack Flagg and his wife, Maria Spang Taylor, courtesy of Dee McDonald, a Spang descendent. The photo was taken circa 1892. Flagg was the son of a prominent Virginia family and was college educated. At age 17 he went to Texas and came to Wyoming as a cowboy in 1882. He homesteaded on Red Fork of the Powder River in 1886 and purchased the Hat Brand and a few cattle. He was hated by the Wyoming Stockgrowers/big cattlemen element in the county and state for a variety of reasons and he was a key character in the events of the Johnson County War.
