Aug 27, 1868 Jesuit missionary Father Pierre-Jean De Smet camped near
Kaycee on the Powder River on his way to the Peace Treaty Council of
1868. Known as the "friend of Sitting Bull" for his role in convincing
Sitting Bull to attend the council, De Smet traveled all over the west
to convert Native Americans.
Lesser-known Lutheran Missionaries
established a mission in 1859 east of Kaycee on the Powder River as
depicted in this drawing. However, they departed after their leader was
killed by Indians.
