Thomas F. Carr was born in North Carolina in 1864. His father had died in the Civil War and his mother died shortly after his birth. He was raised by an aunt and uncle, before following his brother to Nebraska to find work. He ended up working for Swan Cattle Company in Wyoming, before marrying Julia Bridger in 1890 and going to work at the Bar C Ranch. Due to the unrest of the Johnson County War, he left employment at the Bar C and took a job hauling mail for the Riverside Post Office. This left his young family alone during the long trips, so they decided to file on desert land claims on Beaver Creek in the Barnum area. Over time he expanded the ranch. The Carrs were active in community affairs, helping to build the Barnum Hall, along with others in the community.
