IN MEMORIAM – In the meridian of life our energetic and enterprising neighbor, George A. Marks, without a moment’s warning, was taken from the bosom of his family and the cares and trials of life to obey the summons which all of us must get to cross the Great Divide. Mr. Marks, several weeks ago, left his happy home for Oregon in the interest of A. B. Clarke, and while in that state purchased several cars of horses. His trip was apparently successful, and no doubt the thought uppermost in his mind on leaving Oregon for his return home was the joyous meeting with his family. Everything went well until his arrival at Missoula, and there the string which held his life to earthly things was snapped, a few hours afterward. It seems that he was in the railroad yards, looking after the stock, when he was knocked down and run over, one leg being cut off near the thigh, and one foot crushed. He was taken to the N. P. hospital, and was conscious to the last. At 12:30 o’clock the spirit of Mr. Marks surrendered, and his life work was done. The sad news was received in Rosebud at an early hour Saturday morning, and came as a sad shock to the community in which the unfortunate man was so universally respected. One mile south of town, and at the mouth of the Rosebud that bright summer morn, there dwelt his widow and two children – unconscious of the sad news so soon to be imparted to them. And what adds pathos to the mournful event, the widow was soon to become mother to a baby boy only a few hours after the soul of its father had winged its way to eternity. Several hours after the child was born kindly and tenderly Mrs. T. A. Davis appraised Mrs. Marks of being bereft of a loving husband. George A. Marks was born in Oregon thirty-one years ago. At an early day his parents moved to Dayton, Wyo., and thence to the Big Spring ranch, where they died. The surviving children are Mrs. Wm. Munson of Decker, Mrs. Mable Simpson of Oregon, and Mrs. Eunice Parker of Decker. George Marks was a loyal and model husband. He was singularly reticent, but his sole aim seemed to be one of struggle and perseverance for those he loved so well. In a picturesque spot, where the snowcapped Big Horn mountains overhang the little town of Dayton, and where his father and his mother are at rest in the village graveyard, his body was consigned to the grave, there to rest until the glad reveille is sounded on the morning of a new life.
