Gilday, James

Sheridan Post, Saturday, January 16, 1904

Gilday Funeral
James Gilday, a survivor of the Hanna mine disaster, and who has been working at Dietz the last two months, was crushed about the head and chest by falling rock, in mine number 2, first of the week. He lived four days after the injury, however, when he died, leaving a wife and two small children.

The deceased was a middle aged man and a member of Dietz union number 2312 UMWA. The funeral services were held from the Catholic church at Dietz yesterday at 9:00 a.m., and interment was at Mount Hope cemetery, Sheridan, at noon, the ritualistic ceremonies of the labor union being used at the grave. A special train of five cars brought the mourners to Sheridan. Nearly the entire membership of the Miner's union turned out to the funeral of their unfortunate brother, the mines being closed down for the day. Director Geo. Levi Smith was in charge of the funeral. The Dietz band was in attendance.
