Obits Sheridan County Wyoming

Laurel E. Garrett, former Sheridan resident and former homesteader on Deer Creek northeast of Gillette, died Friday at the home of his daughter, Alta Whaley, of Gillette.

He had been in ill health for the past three months. Mr. Garrett and his family came to Wyoming in 1911 and homesteaded on Deer Creek. Later they moved to Sheridan where they made their home.

Survivors include four sons, Orvil, Fr. [sic] Dodge, Ia.; Al, St. Joseph, Mo.; Everett, Elwood, Kan.; and Laurel E. (Pete) Garrett, Jr., Sheridan; two daughters, Mrs. L.M. Whaley, Gillette, and Mrs. Carl Melton, Douglas; 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.

Mr. Garrett's wife, Arilla May Garrett, preceded him in death in 1934. three infant daughters and a son died in 1926.

Funeral services will be at Gillette, 2 p.m., Monday, June 5, at Noecker's Funeral Home.

Garrett Services Set

Funeral services for Laurel E. Garrett, who died Wednesday at his home of an apparent heart attack, will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday from Ferries Funeral Home.

The Rev. Kenneth Rice will officiate and interment will be in Sheridan Cemetery.

Garrett was born Feb. 9, 1905 in St. Joseph, Mo. He moved to Campbell County with his parents in 1913 to homestead near Gillette. After attending Gillette schools, he worked for Burlington Railroad and was transferred to Edgemont, S.D. In 1940 he came to Sheridan County and operated a dairy farm near Big Horn. In 1953 he moved to Sheridan and worked for the city as a meter reader.

He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Eagles Lodge.

Survivors include a son, Ronald, and a daughter, Maxine A. Helling, both of Casper; two sisters, Mrs. Alta Whaley, Sheridan, and Mrs. Vera Melton, Douglas; a brother, Everett, Elwood, Kan.; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may benefit the heart fund in care of Rose Marie Madia, Bank of Commerce.

Lee E. Garrett, 61, self-employed heavy equipment operator, died Sunday evening at his home in Big Horn.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Big Horn Lions Club.

Survivors include his widow, Agnes, Big Horn; a son, Gary Garrett, Greybull; three daughters, Betty Maxted and Mrs. Charles Murphy, both of Sheridan, and Cindy Grider, Billings, Mont.; two brothers, Don and Freeman Garrett, Alliance, Neb.; two sisters, Alice Coupens, Loveland, Colo., and Mrs. Bud Montague, Grand Island, Neb.; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, at Champion Funeral Home with the Elks Lodge in charge. Interment will be in the Elks section at Sheridan Cemetery.
