LeRoy W. Evans, 81, of Dayton died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Dayton Community Church. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Thursday at the Dayton Community Church with pastor Kevin McMahon officiating. Interment will follow in the Dayton Town Cemetery with military honors. Mr. Evans was born Nov. 11, 1919, in Petaluma, Calif., to Ruth Louise (Thorsen) and Eugene Edward Evans. Growing up in a military family allowed him to live in many places, among them: Maine, Delaware, the Philippine island of Corregidor and Honolulu, where he graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1938. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Dec. 17, 1941, and served until the end of World War II, seeing combat with the Rainbow Division in Europe during 1944 and 1945. He married Mary Lee Boggs Jan. 10, 1946, in Denver. They lived and ranched in the mountain community of Fraser, Colo., for 50 years. He loved animals, including horses and cows, but was especially fond of his German shepherd dogs. He and his wife enjoyed many activities together including gardening and spending time with each of their six grandchildren and their 2-year-old great-granddaughter. He enjoyed watching the grandchildren participate in sports. He also worked for the Denver Water Board for 19 years as a machine operator. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion and the Dayton Community Church. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Patricia Mischke of Dayton; a son, Walter L. Evans of Park City, Utah; a brother, Norman Evans of Middletown, Calif.; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
