Carbone came to this country at the age of 14 years and to this area two years later. He was a rancher and coal miner in the Decker area for many years until his retirement, working for the Kearney Coal Company. He retired in 1962.

He was married in 1943 in Hardin, Montana. He was preceded in death by three brothers. Besides his wife, Caterina, survivors include his son, Rocco, of Sheridan; daughter, Mary Bartot of Dubois; brother Santo of Denver, Colo.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A member of Holy Name parish of the Catholic Church here, a rosary will be said for him at 7 p.m. Thursday at Champion's Funeral Home. Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the church, with the Rev. Father Robert Marko saying the mass. Burial will be in municipal cemetery.

Carbone, Kathryn Theresa Scalise

Kathryn Theresa Carbone, 78, died Tuesday at Amie Holt Nursing Home in Buffalo. She had lived there over a year following a stroke.

Born Dec. 1, 1909, in Carneyville to Antonio and Mary Massaro Scalise, she moved with her family to Denver as an infant. She attended school in Denver and married Rocco Carbone there on Nov. 28, 1925.

The couple ranched in Birney, Mont., for nine years before homesteading on Spring Creek near Decker, Mont. They moved to Denver in 1941.

Mrs. Carbone was a munitions inspector in World War II. In 1949 the family come to Sheridan, where she operated the Carbone Italian Restaurant for 18 years.

Preceded in death by a brother, two sisters, and an infant son, she was known for the two tame bobcats she kept for 20 years.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Gerald of Sheridan, Robert of Westminster, Colo., and Larry, of Banner; a sister, Mrs. Gene Orico of Portland, Ore., two brothers, Frank and Victor Scalise, both of Denver; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at Champion Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church, the Rev. William Espenshade officiating, with the burial in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.

Memorials may benefit the Salvation Army in care of Rose Marie Madia, First Interstate bank.

Rocco Carbone, 94, of Sheridan died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Cliff Jacobson officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.

He was born April 8, 1905, in Rock Springs to Costanza (Massaro) and Domenic Carbone.

He married Kathryn T. Scalise Nov. 29, 1925, in Denver. He worked as a rancher and at the Sheridan Flour Mill until retiring. He had resided in Sheridan for more than 60 years and lived in Denver, and Decker, Mont., before moving to Sheridan.

He enjoyed fishing, and his collection of lures, poles and reels could rival the inventory of Ritz Sporting Goods. He was a baseball pitcher for his team at Decker and coached a little league team in Sheridan for years.

He also loved hunting and trapping. He ranched a homestead in the Decker area as a child and as a young father and husband.

He loved football and bad-mouthing the Broncos, but would not miss a game. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Kathryn in 1988; a great-grandson, Joshua Kelly, in 1993; his sister, Mary Bartot in 1995; and a son Gerald in 1997.

Survivors include two sons, Robert of Denver and Larry of Sheridan; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
