July 9th in 1864, a 150-wagon train traveling the Bozeman Trail was attacked by
Indians east of Kaycee on the Powder River. It was led by experienced western
traveler, Absalom Townsend, so became known as the Townsend Wagon Train. The
travelers were well armed and led, so they managed to fend off the attackers and
continue on to Virginia City, Montana. Absalom A. Townsend (1810-1888) was a
very experienced miner from Shullsburg, WI. He was one of the original 49ers in
the California Gold Rush and founded the town of Rough & Ready, CA in 1849. |
