Saint
Josephs Catholic Church.
The Catholic
Church's history starts around 1871 when a
small wooden building was erected at the
cost of about $500. This was 8 years before
the church would have a dedicated Priest.
During those 8 years Father William Kelly
would travel to Rawlins to preach the sermon
and then turn around and head right back to
Cheyenne.
In 1914, a
new location for the church was secured at
the corner of Third and Pine Streets to the
tune of $8300.00. A piece of property
directly North of this was bought for the
sum of $4000.00, and was reserved for a
future school (St. Joseph's Catholic School
now stands in this spot). The old Church
property was sold for $5000.00.
The
cornerstone of the new Church was laid on
October 10, 1915, and the Church was
dedicated by August 6, 1916. The total cost
of the new Church, not including all the new
furnishings, was $32,375.00. When the Church
was completed, there was a debt of
$13,500.00 , which was paid in full in 1921.
In the latter year, the Church was decorated
at a cost of $3,000.00.
In May,
1917, the lot and the house adjoining the
Church were bought for a parochial residence
at a cost of $3,500.00, (the property was
bought in 1914, but clear title was not
acquired until 1917). In March, 1922, the
old St. Joseph's Rectory was sold to Mr.
L.E. Armstrong for the sum of $651.00, and
was moved by him 4 blocks down the road to
Colorado Street. A new smaller brick rectory
was built the same year A new smaller brick
rectory was built the same year.
In the Fall
of the year, 1926, the choir balcony was
extended and remodeled in preparation to
install a new pipe organ. This improvement
and the installation of the organ cost
$8000.00.
On the
night of February 10, 1933, a fire of
unknown origin practically destroyed the
entire interior of the Church. The extent of
the damage was placed at $11,000.00.
Fortunately it was covered by insurance.
While the work of reconstruction was in
progress, Mass was celebrated in the Elks
Hall on Sundays, and in the rectory on
weekdays.
By Easter
Sunday, April 16,1933, Mass was celebrated
in the newly rebuilt Church since the
disastrous fire. On Tuesday, October 17,
1933, the new marble altar was consecrated.
The Episcopal Church parish was organized
and incorporated under the name St. Thomas
in 1881. In 1882 The parish bought south
east corner of 6th and Pine to build a
permanent church, the cornerstone was laid
on July 19th 1882. The bell for the church
arrived April 18th 1884, and the church was
consecrated May 25th 1884. The church cost
$2,298.00, and was well worth every penny.
The Methodist
Episcopal Church was first organized on
December 24th, 1867. The land to build the
church on was bought from the Union Pacific
Railroad Company in 1878 for a whapping
$37.50, ant the corner stone of the church
was laid on September 23rd 1881 on the
corner of 6th and Buffalo Street. The
Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F)
and the Masons Turned out to honor the
occasion, with the cornerstone being laid
according to Masonic rites. It took less
than a year to build the church, but to
dedicate it they needed a bell, but did not
have the funds to purchase one. To solve
this problem they asked Union Pacific
Blacksmith Robert Wilson to make them a
large triangle of steel which was arranged
to be struck by a hammer. With this the
church was dedicated and the first services
were held on April 2nd 1882.
The France
Memorial United Presbyterian Church is a
Gothic Revival building and was constructed
in 1882.
The land for this
lovely church was bought from the Union
Pacific Railroad company for $62.50.
The materials to
build the first church were supplied by
Lyman Bridges of Chicago at the cost of
$950.00. The First Presbyterian church
building in Wyoming was erected, and opened
its doors on March 13th 1870.
In May of 1881 a
new reverend took over the church and
subscribed $2000 for a new church. The old
Church was sold for $300.00 and moved off
the lot and construction on the new church
began in may of 1882. Construction ended
late the same year, the new church cost a
total of $7,800.00.
