Maps and Places

As with all of the West, communities lived and died quickly in early Big Horn County. Sometimes in researching our family a place name may leave us scratching our heads so it is pretty important to understand the geography in order to understand history.

Post Office

Post office locations are a great way to see the change in communities over time. These locations come from the United States Official Postal Guide for 1899, 1909, and 1920. A copy of each is available on Google books for free.

Some of these places just disappeared, some were divided into a different county and some post offices were shut down with the mail routed to a nearby post office. You can find descriptions of some of these places at Wyoming Places, a service by the Wyoming State Library.
